They were able to take astaxanthin and go windsurfing all afternoon long without getting sunburned. For my part, I'm under the sun on a regular basis. As a result, I have fairly dark skin coloration for a white guy. But I knew that when I went to Hawaii, I was going to get burned if I went under the sun without any sunscreen for an entire afternoon, especially out on the ocean, where I was getting not only the direct rays from the sun, but also the rays bouncing off of the water.
So, as an experiment, since I'd been taking astaxanthin, I decided to go outside and try this without any sunscreen whatsoever. Now that's not something I recommend other people do, but I wanted to try it myself to find out what the results would be. The results were rather interesting. I didn't burn at all, but I did see some slight redness on my skin after three hours, which faded later that evening. Remember, this is three hours of intense tropical sunlight with a double dose.
This was an unexpected side effect, because it was not reported in any of the study literature surrounding astaxanthin. As you may know, I engage in gymnastics on a regular basis, do a lot of yoga and Pilates, and I'm a very physical person. But part of the downside to that is I'm frequently sore, and I tend to feel a lot of chronic soreness in the muscles and joints that I stretch and work heavily as part of these exercise routines. I'm 35 years old, and out there throwing my body around on the gymnastics floor like a 17-year-old.

Unfortunately, for consumers, there is no real way to know whether they are getting salmon colored with astaxanthin or canthaxanthin. The FDA does, however, limit the acceptable amount of canthaxanthin to 30 milligrams per pound of salmon, thereby significantly minimizing the safety risk. Another big concern regarding fish farms is their environmental impact. To address the issue of environmental impact, beginning in the mid-1990s, many salmon farms began using underwater cameras to monitor the salmon as they feed below the surface of the water.

On the issue of sunlight exposure, by the way, it turns out that super antioxidants greatly boost your body's ability to handle sunlight without burning. astaxanthin is one of the most powerful "internal sunscreens" and can allow you to stay under the sun twice as long without burning. Other powerful antioxidants with this ability include the superfruits like Acai, Pomegranates (POM Wonderful juice), blueberries, etc. Diseases and conditions cause by vitamin D deficiency: Osteoporosis is commonly caused by a lack of vitamin D, which greatly impairs calcium absorption.

Had these study participants been given another powerful antioxidant -- astaxanthin -- they would likely have experienced even greater reductions in arthritis pain. astaxanthin is fast becoming recognized one of the most effective natural antioxidants for reducing or even eliminating arthritis pain, chronic back pain, muscle soreness, and other physical pains.

Scientists investigated the effects of an antioxidant called astaxanthin in stress-induced, immune suppression in mice. When exposed to stress, the number of natural killer (NK) and other immune cells was reduced and an increase in liver lipid peroxidation was observed. After 4 days of astaxanthin administration, immune dysfunction induced by stress improved. In this same study, cancer cells were injected and effects of tumor development and metastatic lesions were evaluated in response to induced stress.

Daily administration of astaxanthin for 14 days markedly attenuated the promotion of hepatic metastasis induced by stress. The scientists stated that the results of this study suggest that the antioxidant, astaxanthin, improves antitumor immune responses by inhibiting lipid peroxidation induced by stress (Kurihara et al. 2002). Despite these studies indicating that supplements confer a significant anticancer benefit, there are certain supplements that cancer patients might consider avoiding, at least during active treatment.

They would be better off with simple over-the-counter painkillers or, better yet, natural health treatments like nutrition, herbal remedies and supplements that work far better than prescription drugs for stopping arthritis pain (and without all the negative side effects). astaxanthin supplements, for one, greatly ease arthritis pain. The antioxidant powers of fatty fish come from a substance called astaxanthin. This antioxidant hunts down and destroys free radicals that might damage cells in your body. When animals with lymphoma, a type of cancer, were given fish oil and the amino acid arginine, they lived longer and had longer periods without the disease than animals who were not treated. In addition, researchers have found that omega-3 can slow the growth of cancers — the exact opposite of what they found for omega-6, which can help cancers grow. But astaxanthin does even more.
The pinkish color of a salmon and the reddish hue of a lobster come from astaxanthin — a natural protector against the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Since skin cancer has been linked to sunburns, it makes sense to protect yourself as much as possible. When mice were fed astaxanthin in their diets, then exposed to ultraviolet radiation — similar to the rays of the sun — their skin was less damaged than mice that weren't fed the antioxidant. An added bonus of eating lots of fatty fish is healthier looking skin. If your skin is dry and rough, it could be a sign that you need more oil.

The surprising answer is that, based on the health-enhancing properties of other pigmentation chemicals from the animal world (such as astaxanthin found in crustaceans and salmon -- it's 500 times stronger than vitamin E as an antioxidant), carmine may very well be good for you. It's certainly better for you than any synthetic color, such as FD&C No. 40, which is derived from coal tar. Would you rather be eating a pigment created by insects, or one derived through the refining of fossil fuels? Personally, I'd rather eat the insect pigment.

To my knowledge, there aren't many studies available right now showing the relationship between astaxanthin and heart health, but I think those studies will be coming down the road. So this is one of those areas where, if you're taking the supplement, it's not necessarily proven for cardiovascular health but it probably will be down the road. And in the meantime, you're giving yourself worthy antioxidant protection by taking it.
